EU life-projekt PeatCarbon

Silkeborg Kommune, Teknik og Miljøafdelingen deltager i et EU-financieret Life-Klima projekt. Projektet hedder Life PeatCarbon og er et samarbejde mellem Letland, Finland, Tyskland og Danmark.

Globalt set er tørvemoser af meget stor betydning for klimaet. I tørvemoserne oplagres enorme mængder af kulstof, som, hvis tørvemoserne drænes, frigives som CO2. Frigivelsen af CO2 bidrager til den globale opvarmning.

Målet med projektet PeatCarbon er at stoppe den vedvarende nedbrydning af højmoserne, med frigivelse af kulstof til følge, og derved afbøde klimaforandringer. Der vil blive etableret dæmninger og spunse i grøfter, i og omkring moserne i projektet, for at hæve vandstanden og sikre høj vandstand. De vandmættede moser vil tilbageholde kulstof, ligesom det vil sikre genvækst af vegetation som f.eks. Sphagnum-mosser.

I projektet arbejdes der også med en metode hvor man ved hjælp af monitering af vegetation, vandstand og CO2 og brug af remote sensing vil udvikle enøkosystem-model, som kan bidrage til øget viden om reduktion af udledning af drivhusgasser.

Naturgenopretningsprojekterne foregår i Letland og Finland.

Vidensdeling og udbredelse af resultater fra projektet påhviler Tyskland og Danmark. Silkeborg Kommune skal bl.a. afholde en konference om udtagning af kulstofholdig lavbundsjord i Danmark, med inddragelse af resultater fra projekterne i Finland og Letland.

Projektet løber fra 1. juli 2022 til 30. juni 2027

Life PeatCarbon, Peatland restoration for greenhouse gas emission reduction and carbon sequestration in the Baltic Sea region

Silkeborg Municipality take part in a project financed by the European Commission and based on the cooperation of Latvia, Finland, Germany and Denmark.

PeatCarbon aims to successfully implement climate change mitigation (CCM) measures in raised bogs in Latvia and Finland. To stop continual degradation and release of carbon emissions from these peatlands, dams in drainage ditches along the bog perimeters will be constructed. The water-soaked earth will allow vegetation to regrow in degraded areas and prevent carbon from being released from the peat.

An important aspect of the project is the utilization of innovative methods, including the creation of an ecosystem model based on remote sensing and monitoring results. Through these innovative methods, resulting changes in the hydrology, vegetation and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions can be supervised closely. Monitoring also provides and contributes to knowledge on decreasing GHG emissions that can later be accessed by policymakers and the general public. Knowledge sharing events hosted in Germany and Denmark at the end of the project to educate politicians, experts and the public will promote the results of the project and the importance of peatlands in carbon emission reduction.
